Telehealth Workflows

This collection of sample telehealth workflows offers providers examples of how common aspects of telehealth care might be provided. Each outlines the steps for providing a common component of family planning and sexual health care via telehealth, including helpful pre-visit steps such as helping patients with technology set-up, connecting to interpretation services, or collecting administrative information and medical history before the provider encounter.

Powerpoint versions of each are provided for users who wish to customize the workflow to their own setting.

  1. Technology Set-Up - By mapping out the best practice steps for telehealth technology set up, this workflow assists health centers to minimize the likelihood that patients will encounter technology issues during a telehealth visit, ultimately leading to a better patient experience of care and increased efficiency. Users who wish to customize the technology set-up process for their own settings may use the Powerpoint version of the workflow.
  2. Patient Work Up - This workflow outlines the steps involved with a telehealth-based patient work up (i.e., the collection of a patient’s administrative information and medical history). These steps may take place at a scheduled time in advance of or immediately prior to the patient’s telehealth visit. There is a Powerpoint version of the workflow for users who wish to customize the patient work-up process in their own settings.
  3. Connecting to Interpretation Services - Connecting patients with interpretation services during telehealth visits may lead to disruptions in workflow, delays, and other technological issues. This workflow outlines steps that health centers may follow to streamline the process of connecting patients with interpretation services. Users who wish to customize the interpretation services connection process for their own settings may use the Powerpoint version of the workflow.
  4. Contraceptive Initiation and Management - This workflow outlines a process for providing standard contraceptive initiation and management services as a telehealth visit. There is a Powerpoint version of the workflow for users who wish to customize the provision of contraceptive services in their own settings.
  5. Telehealth Visit with Curbside Pickup or Dropoff - Outline workflow steps for patients who, as a follow-up to their telehealth visit, come to a health center to drop off a self-collected sample or pickup a prescription, self-collection kit, or other supplies. Workflow steps utilize COVID-19 safety practices to minimize close contact between health center staff and patients. A powerpoint version is available here for those who would like to customize the process for their own health care setting.
  6. Remote Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) or Genital Tract Infection Screening and Treatment - This document maps out the steps for providing evidence-based STI and genital tract infection care to patients as a telehealth visit. A powerpoint version is available here for those who would like to customize the process for their own health care setting.
  7. Point-of-Care Testing at Home -This document outlines the process for delivering point-of-care testing to telehealth patients who are eligible for and interested in self-administering their test. Patients can obtain their self-collection kits by mail, retail pharmacy, pickup inside the health center, or curbside pickup outside the health center. A powerpoint version is available here for those who would like to customize the process for their own health care setting.
  8. Telehealth Visit with Curbside Collection - Outlines the workflow steps for health centers to provide curbside specimen collection as part of a hybrid telehealth/in-person visit. Workflow steps utilize COVID-19 safety practices to minimize close contact between health center staff and patients. A powerpoint version is available here for those who would like to customize the process for their own health care setting.
