NFPRHA Warns House Budget Package is a Calculated
Attack on Nation’s Family Planning Network
Washington, DC – The following is a statement from Clare Coleman, President & CEO of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA), in response to the U.S. House of Representatives' passage of the budget reconciliation package, which now heads to President Donald Trump for signature:
“The House has joined the Senate in advancing a cruel and calculated attack on the nation’s family planning safety net. If signed into law, this legislation will inflict irreversible harm on patients and the dedicated health care providers who serve them — particularly those reaching people with low incomes, people of color, rural communities, and others already facing steep barriers to care. Essential services, including contraception, STI testing and treatment, cancer screenings, and other sexual and reproductive health care, will be drastically reduced or eliminated as cuts to Medicaid force health centers to push patients out of care. Many family planning providers, already strained by chronic underfunding, simply cannot absorb disruption on this scale. Additionally, the provision barring certain abortion providers from participating in Medicaid is a transparent political maneuver that will destabilize provider networks and leave tens of thousands without their trusted source of care.
“This package deals a catastrophic blow to public health. We will continue to fiercely advocate for access to affordable care and support the health care providers who will face immediate and devastating impacts, with health centers forced into cutting staff, reducing hours, eliminating services, or closing altogether. Americans should not ‘get over it’ when lawmakers strip people of essential care, and NFPRHA never will. We will continue to fight for better policies, document the damage being done and share the real and devastating stories about the impact these policy decisions will have on providers, patients, and communities.”
