NFPRHA Statement on House Passage of Harmful Reconciliation Bill

Washington, DC – The following is a statement from Clare Coleman, President & CEO of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA), in reaction to US House passage of budget reconciliation legislation:

“The National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA) is deeply concerned by the House’s passage of its reconciliation package. If enacted, this bill would cause serious and lasting harm to people across the country—especially those who already face systemic barriers to care due to income, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, disability, or geographic location.

“This bill would take health insurance coverage away from millions of people by accelerating burdensome Medicaid work requirements. Medicaid currently pays for 75% of publicly funded family planning and sexual health care, including contraception, STI testing and treatment, and cancer screenings. Stripping people of this coverage means cutting them off from these vital services.

“This bill is a direct attack on public health and on the people who rely on safety-net providers for care. Its impact would be devastating—leading to more people without coverage, fewer receiving timely care, and decreased access to health care providers for everyone with Medicaid insurance. These outcomes are not accidental; they are the result of deliberate policy choices that punish people for their circumstances and deem individuals in the Medicaid expansion population as unworthy of the public benefits they are entitled to by law.

“This is not reform—it is reckless, punitive legislation that puts lives at risk. Congress should be working to expand access to care and eliminate health disparities, not enacting policies that deepen inequities and target those who are already most vulnerable.

“The Senate must reject this bill. It cannot become law.”
