NFPRHA Reacts to Senate Passage of Reconciliation Bill

Washington, DC – The following is a statement from Clare Coleman, President & CEO of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA), in reaction to US Senate passage of budget reconciliation legislation:

“The Senate’s reconciliation bill is a direct attack on the most vulnerable, disenfranchised people in our country. Those living with low incomes, pregnant people, people with disabilities, people seeking family planning and sexual health care, and others who already face tremendous barriers to care will suffer immensely.

“The proposed cuts to Medicaid will have a swift and devastating impact on the nationwide network of family planning providers. Hundreds of health centers that aren’t able to receive reimbursement for patients on Medicaid will shutter, leaving whole communities without care. Through burdensome Medicaid work requirements, millions could lose their health insurance and consequently their access to affordable contraception, STI testing, and cancer screenings.

“The bill also includes language that would bar certain safety-net providers from participating in Medicaid for one year — a provision clearly aimed at excluding Planned Parenthood and other essential providers of abortion. If enacted, this would strip tens of thousands of patients of their trusted health care provider and destabilize provider networks in every state.

“Currently, one in five people in the US and almost HALF of the nation’s children rely on Medicaid to access affordable health care. Medicaid covers the costs of 41% of all U.S. births. It is a lifeline to millions of people and it’s popular among both Republicans and Democrats, according to a recent KFF poll.

“Americans need access to health care and health insurance coverage. Congress must not dismantle a program that its constituents rely on -- this bill cannot become law. Our nation’s health, safety, and economic security are at stake.”
