NFPRHA Laments the Loss of Roe Two Years Later
Washington, D.C. – The following is a statement from Clare Coleman, President & CEO of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association.
“The Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling prompted an immediate and drastic unraveling of abortion access across the country, resulting in 14 states that have imposed a total ban on abortion and many more states that have enacted various restrictions.
“The heartbreaking effects of abortion bans and restrictions have always been disproportionately felt by Black, Indigenous, and people of color, individuals with low incomes, residents of rural communities, those with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and young people. Those disparities have only been exacerbated as state laws have become more extreme. Around the country, people are waking up to the fact that these bans are impacting everyone involved in any aspect of pregnancy and childbirth, including those seeking IVF treatment and those experiencing pregnancy and labor complications, and we do not yet know the full extent of the harm that this ruling will cause.
“Abortion opponents have made clear that they do not intend to stop at overturning Roe and are relying on the same strategies used in Dobbs to achieve their goals. In the past two years, courts and policymakers have taken aim at essential laws and policies that safeguard access to birth control, protect gender-affirming care, and uphold adolescents’ access to confidential family planning care. The scary and sobering reality is that no one in this country will be unaffected by the tragedies of the Dobbs ruling.”
