NFPRHA Condemns HHS Policy Denying Health Care Based on Immigration Status
Washington, DC –The following is a statement from Clare Coleman, President & CEO of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA), in response to a policy change by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that restricts access to federal health programs, including Title X, based on immigration status:
NFPRHA strongly opposes HHS’s decision to try to restrict access to health care based on immigration status. Health care is a human right, and restricting it based on documentation status is unjust, dangerous, and contrary to the nation’s public health values.
Today’s announcement applies to a host of programs that primarily focus on serving low-income populations most in need of publicly funded health care, including the Title X family planning program. For more than 50 years, Title X has provided high-quality, confidential, and affordable sexual and reproductive health care to all, regardless of who they are or where they come from. HHS’s policy change would upend longstanding Public Health Service Act interpretation, threaten public health, and foster discrimination against immigrant communities and others who can’t prove citizenship.
