  • How to Design on a Shoestring
Pre-registration is required.
Strong marketing design for everything from a promotional flyer to a share graphic to a new logo is essential to reinforce agencies’ or programs’ value propositions. However, as technology improves, designing high-quality materials does not always require expensive design software or outsourcing to a design consultant or firm. There are key best practices to make materials - marketing brochures, educational materials, agency signs, forms, and more - unique and engaging while still informative and representative of the agency’s objectives. Sit down with NFPRHA’s communications team to learn various tips and tricks with readily accessible software, like Word and PowerPoint, to help strengthen the visual presentation of various products.

  • 340B Basics and Compliance
The 340B drug pricing program, which offers discounts on drugs and devices to safety-net providers including Title X-funded health centers, is often a source of confusion for participants. This session will review the basics of 340B, and discuss important elements of program compliance. The session will be tailored specifically for family planning providers and the unique opportunities and challenges of 340B in that context.

  • Expanding access and optimizing care for adolescent populations
Adolescents face unique barriers to accessing family planning and sexual health care and often their needs go unmet. Even though adolescents are often at a greater risk for unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, obstacles such as inaccessible locations for services and confusion around costs and available resources prevent teens from seeking care. In this session, we will learn about how to expand access to services and respond to the special needs of adolescent populations.

10:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Break
10:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Workshops
  • Coding Fundamentals
Pre-registration is required.
Medical coding is an integral part of health center revenue cycle management; however, training is rarely provided to the staff who need it most. This session will cover the fundamentals of family planning coding for all types of staff. Topics will include the basics of diagnosis and procedure codes, as well as guidance on code selection.

  • Collecting Patient Stories
Patients have some of the most impactful voices when it comes to improving how providers deliver -- and people access -- health care in the US. However, harnessing the power of patient stories can be mired in the sometimes-onerous process of developing a full repository of anecdotes. This session will provide easy tools for members to begin building and utilizing their own bank of patient stories. Participants will hear from outside experts in patient advocacy about how they have gathered, built and deployed an arsenal of patient stories to further their agency’s policy goals and overall mission.

  • Trauma-Informed Care
As a growing body of research links trauma to both physical and mental health, service providers across disciplines have begun integrating trauma-informed service delivery to care for and support their patients with a history of trauma. Using a trauma-informed approach to care at health centers facilitates patient recovery and wellness and has the potential to mitigate high medical costs of the effects of trauma on patient health. This session will discuss trauma-informed care in the health care setting and explore evidence for why incorporating trauma-informed perspectives into services can be beneficial for both patients and health centers. The session will also offer important considerations and lessons learned from organizations that have begun implementation of trauma-informed care

11:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Break
12:00 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. Lunch Plenary: Access to Family Planning under Challenging Circumstances
Natural disasters have ravaged many parts of the US this year, and the destruction has taken its toll on the infrastructure of safety-net health care. Family planning providers impacted by these disruptions face, in many cases, completely rebuilding service sites while still maintaining a connection to patients and the community. Join a panel moderated by our host state, Louisiana, to hear about lessons learned in disaster preparedness and response.

1:30 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. Workshops
  • Strategies to Address Patient Barriers to Care
Patients of safety-net health centers often face barriers to access to care. Providers who work to address these broader challenges have an opportunity to improve patient access and outcomes among priority populations. In this session, presenters will share their strategies to support patients who experience language barriers, disabilities, complex medical issues, and transportation issues.

  • Transforming Your Family Planning Service Delivery Network
Recent shifts in the health policy and financing landscapes have required both states and Title X grantees to reconsider how best to meet the family planning and sexual health care needs of vulnerable populations. In some cases, states and grantees have been prompted to consider the reach and composition of their service delivery networks. This session will explore how state networks and Title X grantees have opened and closed service delivery sites, with a dual emphasis on operational considerations and managing new and longstanding relationships.

  • Engaging Media as a Part of Advocacy & Education
Leveraging media coverage is a cost-effective way to shape public opinion and engage decisionmakers, partners, and other stakeholders in support of an agency’s priorities. This session will highlight tactics to work with reporters and deliver effective messages about publicly funded family planning through the news media.

3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.  Title X Priorities for FY 2018
Each year the Office of Population Affairs establishes program priorities that represent overarching goals for the Title X program. In recent years, these priorities have typically been drawn from Healthy People 2020 Objectives and from priorities established by the Department of Health and Human Services. This session will examine the recently announced FY 2018 program priorities and address strategies for implementation.

  • Anticipating 2018 Legislative Cycles
State legislatures across the country are gearing up this fall for 2018 legislative cycles. These state sessions could significantly impact family planning access, from progressive legislators who push through bills to protect family planning resources to opponents who force closures of family planning providers through restrictive policies. Hear from NFPRHA members and national experts on what to expect in the 2018 sessions, tactics to be involved in shaping the legislatures’ policy agendas, and opportunities to stay informed and engaged as sessions proceed.

Grantee Reviews: A Catalyst for Improvement
Compliance and quality improvement (QI) efforts require an active partnership between grantees and sub-recipients that often is better defined following grantee site reviews. In this session, sub-recipients will reflect on how they prepared for grantee site visits, offering insights into how these reviews served as a catalyst for improvement. They also will discuss how they worked to proactively identify program weaknesses, establish appropriate action plans, and respond to any review findings, if needed.

  • Lessons learned from Financial Management Learning Collaborative
Title X agencies from across the country recently came together to participate in the Financial Management Learning Collaborative (FMLC) that was convened by the Family Planning National Training Center. Join a panel of FMLC participants to hear about insights gained from participating in this collaborative, with a focus on performance improvements that can be replicated in a variety of family planning settings.
