NFPRHA Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Supreme Court Decision that Legalized Birth Control for All

Washington, DC – Today marks the 50th anniversary of Eisenstadt v. Baird, a landmark case in which the US Supreme Court ruled that unmarried people had the right to legally access contraceptive care. The 1972 ruling happened seven years after a decision in Griswold v. Connecticut that first made birth control legal for married people. The following is a statement from Clare Coleman, President & CEO of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA) recognizing the anniversary.

"The Eisenstadt decision marked a pivotal moment for reproductive rights and serves as a reminder today about the role of contraception in people’s lives. Despite progress made to protect the Constitutional right to family planning and sexual health care, too many people struggle to access and afford the care they need. At a time when the stakes for abortion access have never been higher, we are also seeing efforts in courtrooms and statehouses across the country to chip away at contraceptive access. To honor the legacy of Eisenstadt, we must do everything we can to make reproductive freedom a reality for everyone.”
