NFPRHA Seeks Injunction to Save Title X Family Planning Program from Trump Administration’s Destructive Rule

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA), represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a motion requesting a preliminary injunction, with the Washington State Attorney General filing at the same time, to block the US Department of Health and Human Services from implementing the final Title X family planning rule.

The following is a statement from Clare Coleman, President & CEO of NFPRHA.

“High-quality family planning and sexual health care is essential, and the Trump administration wants to use the federal Title X program to impose an ideology on poor and low-come people who come to Title X-funded health centers for care.

“There is nothing more important than guaranteeing confidentiality, dignity, and respect to all patients who seek health care, and the administration’s hugely troubling new set of restrictions fly in the face of these Title X guiding principles. We will not stand by as the administration tramples on the network of highly qualified family planning providers who, for decades, have built strong reputations in their communities as trusted and safe sources of care.

“Today, we are asking for nationwide relief from this dangerous and unlawful rule to ensure no patient or trusted provider suffers its undue consequences.”

The following is a statement from Ruth Harlow, senior staff attorney with the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project.

“The Trump administration is shameless in its cruel attacks on people seeking reproductive health care, and we’re tired of it. Today, we are asking the court to stop this administration from dismantling Title X, the nation’s only dedicated family planning program that serves low-income people for free. Preventing patients from receiving the full information on their health care options is not only illegal, it’s malicious, and we won’t stand for it.”

NFPRHA is a membership organization representing publicly funded family planning providers and administrators nationwide. NFPRHA advances and elevates the importance of family planning in the nation’s health care system and promotes and supports the work of family planning providers and administrators, especially those in the safety net.
