Communications Director
SUMMARY
Plan and execute NFPRHA’s communications and media relations goals to advance the organization’s policy, advocacy and regulatory efforts. Lead within NFPRHA to educate various audiences and stakeholders regarding the family planning safety net, high-quality family planning service delivery, structure and financing, as well as a broad range of family planning and sexual health issues.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and execute communications and media relations strategies that support NFPRHA’s mission and strategic plan and which broaden understanding of its members’ work.
- Leverage excellent media relationships and strong understanding of earned and owned media channels to expand NFPRHA’s brand as a thought leader on family planning and sexual health policy for a variety of policy and opinion elites in DC and nationally.
- Enhance NFPRHA’s profile among Capitol Hill news publications through targeted pitching to health policy reporters, support of Hill briefings and media training for NFPRHA leadership and surrogates.
- Respond to media requests, and seek proactive, earned media as determined by the association’s communications strategic plan.
- Oversee strategy, content and logistics for press events.
- Maintain up-to-date press lists and other important contacts.
- Coordinate, develop and produce NFPRHA’s publications and resources for its membership including newsletters in print and electronic formats, email communication, and toolkits.
- Provide final copy edits and ensure consistency of NFPRHA message and voice on a range of external-facing NFPRHA products.
- Develop a strategy for and oversee content of NFPRHA’s digital properties including its website and social media channels to amplify and translate NFPRHA’s work.
- Help craft and deliver persuasive messaging (including opinion pieces) and related collateral materials that simplify complex legislative, regulatory, legal or other priorities for the association and its membership.
- Provide strategic advice and assistance to NFPRHA members with their efforts to gain media coverage for their work in communities around the country.
- Work in coalition with other organizations’ communications staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree (in communications, public relations, journalism, or English preferred). Experience in policy environment either on Capitol Hill or in a health or social policy advocacy organization strongly preferred.
- Five years’ successful track record in communications.
- Interest in family planning and sexual health issues.
- Experience working with reporters “on the record” and has established media contacts in the health space or general press.
