April Membership Call – Tuesday, April 23 at 2:00pm EDT
During the April Membership Call, Dr. Christine Dehlendorf will discuss her New York Times Op-Ed, The Dangerous Rise of the IUD as Poverty Cure, which was published in early 2019. In it, Dr. Dehlendorf and her colleague, Dr. Kelsey Holt, argue the dangers of claiming that increasing women’s access to contraception will unilaterally address societal problems like poverty and economic inequality. They instead emphasize the importance of policies and programs that focus on whether women’s needs are met and their preferences for building (or not building) a family are respected. Dr. Dehlendorf, MD, MAS is a practicing family physician and researcher at the Person-Centered Reproductive Health Program at the University of California, San Francisco.
